Late 1990s to early 2000s. The airfield ceased regular flight operations around 1998-1999, with all activity ceasing and the facility becoming fully abandoned by the early 2000s.
Primarily economic reasons. The airfield was operated by DOSAAF (Voluntary Society for Assistance to the Army, Air Force, and Navy), a paramilitary sports organization. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, state funding for DOSAAF was drastically cut. This led to a severe lack of resources for aircraft maintenance, fuel, and general upkeep of the airfield's infrastructure, forcing the local aero club to shut down operations and abandon the site.
The airfield is currently abandoned and non-operational. The concrete runway and taxiways are still visible but are in a state of severe decay, heavily overgrown with grass and shrubs. The original airfield buildings, such as hangars and administrative offices, are derelict. A portion of the southern end of the former airfield has been redeveloped into a motorsport facility called 'Racepark Vokhrinka' (Рейспарк Вохринка), which features a karting track and hosts local auto racing events, utilizing some of the old paved surfaces.
Historically known as Vokhrinka Airfield (Аэродром Вохринка), it was a typical DOSAAF general aviation airfield. Its main purpose was to provide initial flight training and sports parachuting. It played a significant role in the Soviet system of pre-conscription military training and promoting aviation sports among the civilian population of the Bronnitsy area and surrounding Moscow Oblast. Operations primarily involved standard Soviet-era training and utility aircraft, including the Yakovlev Yak-52 for pilot training and the Antonov An-2 for parachute jumps.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening the site as an airfield. The infrastructure would require a complete and costly reconstruction. Furthermore, part of the land has been permanently repurposed for motorsport activities. The general trend in the densely populated Moscow region is the closure of small airfields for real estate or commercial development, making a revival for aviation purposes extremely unlikely.
