Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately early to mid-1990s. A precise date is not publicly documented, but the airfield fell into disuse following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the subsequent economic changes.

Reason for Closure

Primarily economic reasons. The airfield was dedicated to agricultural aviation. With the collapse of the Soviet collective farm system ('kolkhoz' and 'sovkhoz') in the early 1990s, the demand for aerial crop dusting and fertilization services plummeted, rendering small, specialized airfields like Lobanovo economically unviable and leading to its abandonment.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped and is no longer recognizable as an airfield. The land is now occupied by a large, modern industrial and logistics complex named 'PNK Park Domodedovo-4'. The original runway, taxiways, and any associated aviation infrastructure have been entirely demolished and built over with large warehouses, access roads, and parking facilities. Construction of the industrial park began in the mid-2010s.

Historical Significance

Lobanovo was a typical Soviet-era agricultural aviation airfield ('aerodrom sel'skokhozyaystvennoy aviatsii'). Its primary function was to support the extensive state-run farms in the Domodedovo district of Moscow Oblast. The airfield primarily handled light aircraft, most notably the Antonov An-2 biplane, which was the workhorse for agricultural tasks like spraying pesticides and fertilizers. It was an essential part of the region's agricultural infrastructure during the Soviet period but held no significant military or passenger transport role.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The complete and permanent redevelopment of the site into a major industrial park makes the restoration of aviation activities physically and economically impossible. The land has been irreversibly repurposed.
