Approximately the early 1990s.
Economic reasons following the dissolution of the USSR. The airfield was operated by the state-sponsored paramilitary sports organization DOSAAF (Voluntary Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation, and Navy). With the collapse of the Soviet Union, state funding for DOSAAF was drastically cut, leading to the closure of most of its airfields and clubs, including Shabanovo.
The airfield is completely defunct and the land has been entirely redeveloped. Satellite imagery shows that the former runways and taxiways are gone, replaced by private residential houses (known as 'dachas'), private gardens, and some light commercial or storage buildings. There is no remaining aviation infrastructure, and the site is no longer recognizable as an airfield.
Shabanovo was a civilian and paramilitary sports airfield, not a primary military combat base. It was the home of the Pskov Aviation Sports Club (Псковский АСК) of DOSAAF. Its main purpose was to provide initial flight training, parachute training, and recreational flying for the local population. Operations typically involved light trainer aircraft like the Yakovlev Yak-52, utility biplanes such as the Antonov An-2 (used for parachute drops), and gliders. The airfield was a key local hub for developing aviation skills and promoting air sports in the Pskov region during the Soviet era.
None. The prospect of reopening Shabanovo Airfield is zero. The land has been privatized and fully re-purposed for residential and agricultural use, making a revival physically and legally impossible. The region's aviation needs are served by the nearby Pskov Airport (IATA: PKV, ICAO: ULOO), which is an active joint civil and military facility.
