Early 1990s, estimated between 1992 and 1994. No exact date is publicly recorded, but operations ceased along with many other small regional airfields following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Primarily economic reasons. With the dissolution of the USSR, the centralized, state-subsidized funding for Aeroflot's local air services (Местные воздушные линии - MVL) was eliminated. The airport became financially unsustainable due to a sharp decline in passenger traffic, high operational costs, and the overall economic crisis in Russia during the 1990s.
The airport is abandoned and non-operational. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows a clearly defined but unmaintained and overgrown dirt runway. All airport infrastructure, such as a terminal building or service hangars, has either been dismantled or has fallen into ruin. The site is unused for any official purpose and is effectively derelict land.
Idrinskoye Airport was a vital local airfield in the Soviet era, connecting the rural Idrinsky District with larger regional hubs, most likely Krasnoyarsk and Abakan. It was an integral part of the regional transportation network, providing essential services for passengers, mail, and light cargo. The primary aircraft used for these routes was the Antonov An-2, a versatile biplane capable of operating from unpaved runways. The airport also likely supported agricultural aviation (crop dusting) and sanitary (medevac) flights, which were critical for remote communities.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening Idrinskoye Airport. The economic conditions and transportation needs that once justified its existence no longer apply. The local population is small, and ground transportation has improved. The cost of restoring the airfield to modern standards would be prohibitive and lack economic justification. The focus of Russian regional aviation development is on larger, more strategically important airports.
