Mid-1990s (approximately 1993-1995)
The air base was closed following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It served as a training airfield for the Stavropol Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots and Navigators (SVVAULSh), which was disbanded in the early 1990s as part of widespread military restructuring and severe budget cuts that affected the Russian armed forces.
The site is completely abandoned and in a state of severe disrepair. The main runway (approximately 2500 meters), taxiways, and aircraft hardstands are still visible on satellite imagery but are heavily cracked, weathered, and overgrown with vegetation. Over the years, concrete slabs from the airfield surfaces have been systematically dismantled and scavenged for local construction projects. The buildings of the former garrison and technical support areas are derelict, with many being roofless ruins or completely dismantled. The site is not used for any official purpose and is effectively a ghost facility.
Troitskoye Air Base was a significant training facility for the Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO). It was the home base for a training aviation regiment (reportedly the 192nd Training Aviation Regiment) associated with the Stavropol aviation school. The primary operations involved flight training for cadets on jet trainer aircraft, initially the Aero L-29 Delfin and later the Aero L-39 Albatros. The base played a crucial role in the pipeline for producing pilots for the Soviet Union's extensive air defense network.
There are no known or credible plans to reopen or reactivate the Troitskoye Air Base. The extensive degradation of its infrastructure would require a complete reconstruction, making any revival prohibitively expensive. Its original strategic purpose as a training center for a disbanded military school is no longer relevant, and there are other active or better-preserved airfields available for current military needs.
