Circa 1994-1995
The airport was closed due to its replacement by the new, larger, and more modern Bryansk International Airport (IATA: BZK, ICAO: UUBP), which was commissioned in 1994. The old airport's location had become engulfed by the expanding city of Bryansk, and its runway was too short to accommodate the larger jet aircraft that were becoming standard for passenger transport. The new airport was built further from the city center with modern facilities and a longer runway.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now a major residential and commercial district of Bryansk. The land is occupied by numerous new apartment buildings, a large sports complex named the 'Palace of Martial Arts', and a major shopping and entertainment center aptly named 'Aeropark Mall' in a nod to the location's history. The original runway, taxiways, and terminal buildings have been entirely demolished to make way for the new urban infrastructure. There are no visible remnants of the former airport.
This was the original and primary airport for the Bryansk region for most of the 20th century. Established in the Soviet era, it played a crucial role as a military airfield during World War II. After the war, it became the main hub for civil aviation in the region, operated by Aeroflot. It handled regional passenger, mail, and cargo flights, connecting Bryansk with Moscow, St. Petersburg (then Leningrad), and other cities across the USSR. The airport primarily serviced smaller propeller and regional jet aircraft, such as the Antonov An-2, Antonov An-24, and Yakovlev Yak-40. It was also a base for agricultural and other forms of general aviation.
None. The prospect of reopening is zero. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed for high-density urban development, making it physically impossible for the site to ever be used for aviation purposes again. The city is served by the new Bryansk International Airport.
