The airfield ceased regular flight operations in the mid-1990s, approximately between 1993 and 1995, with the formal closure occurring shortly thereafter.
The closure was a direct result of economic turmoil following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The state-subsidized local aviation system, previously run by Aeroflot, became financially unviable. The regional carrier, Vologda Aviation Enterprise, could no longer afford to operate and maintain unprofitable routes to small, remote communities like Tarnogskiy Gorodok. The simultaneous improvement of the regional road network provided a more cost-effective alternative for passenger and cargo transport, further reducing the need for the airfield.
The airfield is completely abandoned and non-operational. Satellite imagery of the site shows a clearly defined but unmaintained and overgrown grass/dirt runway. The former terminal and service buildings are either derelict, repurposed for non-aviation use, or have been dismantled. The land is not being used for any significant purpose and is slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding forest and fields. There is no aviation activity at the site.
During the Soviet era, Tarnogskiy Gorodok Airfield was a crucial transportation link for the relatively isolated Tarnogskiy District. It was an integral part of the USSR's local air lines network (MVL - Местные воздушные линии), connecting the town to the regional capital, Vologda, and other settlements. The airfield primarily serviced passenger flights, mail delivery, medical transport (sanitary aviation), and essential cargo shipments. The workhorse of the airfield was the Antonov An-2 biplane, a rugged aircraft perfectly suited for short, unpaved runways. For decades, the airfield was the fastest and most reliable way to travel to and from the district, playing a vital role in its social and economic life.
There are no known official plans, government initiatives, or credible prospects for reopening the Tarnogskiy Gorodok Airfield. The significant cost required to restore the runway, rebuild modern infrastructure, and certify the airfield for operations is prohibitive. Given the relatively small population of the district and the established road network, there is insufficient economic or logistical demand to justify such an investment. The revival of the airfield is considered highly unlikely.
