Mid-to-late 1990s
The airport's closure was a direct result of the severe economic downturn that followed the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The centrally planned and heavily subsidized Soviet-era regional aviation system collapsed, making small, low-traffic airports like Bereznik financially unviable. The operator, the local Aeroflot division (2nd Arkhangelsk United Aviation Squadron), ceased operations to most of its local destinations as subsidies vanished and operational costs for its aging fleet became unsustainable.
The airport is completely abandoned and in a derelict state. Satellite imagery of the site shows a clearly defined but overgrown and unmaintained dirt runway. The former terminal building and any associated structures are dilapidated and falling into ruin. The site is not used for any aviation, industrial, or agricultural purposes and is slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding forest.
During the Soviet period, Bereznik Airport was a crucial component of the local air service network (Местные воздушные линии - МВЛ) in the Arkhangelsk Oblast. Its primary function was to provide reliable transportation for passengers, mail, and essential cargo between the district center of Bereznik, the regional capital Arkhangelsk (Vaskovo Airport), and numerous remote, otherwise inaccessible villages. The airport was a base for aircraft like the rugged Antonov An-2 biplane, which was perfectly suited for its unpaved runway. It also supported vital state functions, including medical evacuation flights (sanaviatsiya), forestry patrols, and agricultural aviation.
There are no known official plans, government initiatives, or private investments aimed at reopening Bereznik Airport. The cost of restoring the runway, terminal, and navigational infrastructure would be substantial. Given the improved road network and the limited economic and demographic demand in the region, the prospects for its revival as a functioning airport are considered extremely low to non-existent.
