The airport ceased major passenger operations on September 15, 1979, with the opening of the new Kazan International Airport (KZN/UWKD). It continued to be used for some smaller aircraft, training, and helicopter operations, and was known as Kazan-2. The final closure and decommissioning of the airfield occurred in the early 2000s as urban development expanded into the area.
The primary reason for closure was replacement and obsolescence. The old airport was located within what became the city limits, making expansion impossible. Its runways were too short and not equipped to handle the larger, modern jet airliners of the era, such as the Tupolev Tu-154, which required a new, purpose-built facility. The new Kazan International Airport was constructed further from the city to accommodate these larger aircraft and increased passenger demand.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of Kazan's urban landscape. The land where the runways and aprons once were is now occupied by large-scale commercial and residential developments. Notable structures on the former airport grounds include the 'KazanMall' shopping center, other hypermarkets, and numerous modern high-rise apartment complexes. The major thoroughfare, Orenburgsky Trakt, runs through the former airport territory. There are no functional remnants of the airport infrastructure.
Opened in the 1930s, this was the main airport for Kazan and the entire Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic for nearly 50 years. It was a significant regional hub within the Aeroflot network, connecting Kazan to Moscow, Leningrad, and other major cities across the USSR. The airport handled all of the region's passenger and cargo air traffic, initially with propeller aircraft like the Lisunov Li-2 and Ilyushin Il-14, and later with early jet aircraft such as the Tupolev Tu-124 and Yakovlev Yak-40. It was the primary air gateway to the republic throughout the mid-20th century until the jet age necessitated a new facility.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and completely redeveloped for dense urban use. The city of Kazan is served by the modern and capable Kazan International Airport (UWKD), which handles all commercial air traffic, as well as the Kazan Borisoglebskoye Airfield (UWKG), which is associated with the Kazan Aircraft Production Association.
