Military Restructuring and Economic Factors. The primary reason for the closure was the disbandment of the resident military aviation unit, the 562nd Fighter Aviation Regiment (562 IAP), as part of the massive post-Soviet military downsizing and strategic realignment of the Russian Armed Forces. Maintaining a large number of air defense bases in the Far East became economically unsustainable after the collapse of the USSR.
The airport is abandoned and in a state of decay. Satellite imagery confirms that the runway, taxiways, and aircraft revetments are still visible but are cracked, weathered, and being reclaimed by vegetation. Most of the associated buildings and infrastructure have been dismantled, scavenged for materials, or have fallen into ruin. The site is completely inactive as an airfield and is not maintained.
The facility was a key Soviet-era military airbase, not a public civilian airport. It was known as Shimanovsk-2 or Letunovka. Its primary role was as a base for the Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO). From the 1960s to its closure, it hosted the 562nd Fighter Aviation Regiment. This regiment was tasked with air defense for the strategically important Far East region, including protecting the Sino-Soviet border and key industrial and military installations. The regiment operated interceptor aircraft, initially the Sukhoi Su-9 ('Fishpot') and was later re-equipped with the more advanced Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23MLD ('Flogger-K'). The base featured a long concrete runway (approximately 2500 meters) and numerous hardened aircraft shelters (HAS), typical of a Cold War-era fighter base.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening the Shimanovsk airbase. The prohibitive cost of restoring the derelict infrastructure, coupled with the lack of a modern strategic or economic requirement for an airfield at this specific location, makes its revival highly unlikely. The Russian military operates from other, more modern or better-positioned bases in the region, such as Ukrainka Air Base, and civilian air traffic is handled by airports like Ignatyevo Airport (BQS) in Blagoveshchensk.
