Early to mid-1990s. A precise date is not officially documented, but its closure aligns with the widespread, systemic collapse of the Soviet local airline network following the dissolution of the USSR in 1991.
Primarily economic. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the centrally planned and heavily subsidized state airline system (Aeroflot and its regional divisions) was dismantled. Local air routes became economically unviable without state funding. Like hundreds of other small airfields across Russia, Tyukhtet North ceased operations due to a lack of passenger demand at market prices, high operational costs, and the overall economic crisis of the 1990s.
The airport is completely abandoned and defunct. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms that the former unpaved runway is entirely overgrown and is now indistinguishable from the surrounding agricultural fields and grasslands. There is no remaining aviation infrastructure visible, and the site is not maintained. Any former terminal or service buildings are likely derelict or have been repurposed for non-aviation use.
Tyukhtet North was a small, local civil airfield (a 'Class 4' or 'Class E' aerodrome in the Soviet system) that played a crucial role in connecting the remote Tyukhtetsky District with the regional capital, Krasnoyarsk, and other nearby population centers. When active, it was a key part of the local air services network (Местные воздушные линии - МВЛ). Operations primarily involved small utility aircraft, most notably the Antonov An-2, which handled passenger flights, mail delivery, cargo transport, and vital air ambulance services (санитарная авиация). For much of the Soviet era, it provided the most reliable year-round connection for the community.
There are no known official plans or realistic prospects for reopening the Tyukhtet North airfield. The region's small population and the existence of a functional road network to larger cities make the re-establishment of air services economically unjustifiable. The site is not part of any current Russian federal or regional programs for airport modernization or reconstruction, which are focused on larger, more strategically important regional hubs.
