The airport did not have a single, formal closure date but gradually fell into disuse during the 1990s. Most aviation activities ceased by the mid-1990s.
The closure was primarily due to economic reasons and the political instability following the breakup of Yugoslavia. State funding for aero clubs and agricultural aviation, which were the main users of the airfield, collapsed. The subsequent hyperinflation and conflicts in the region made sport and general aviation financially unviable and impractical, leading to its gradual abandonment.
The site is completely abandoned and derelict. Satellite imagery confirms that the former grass/dirt runways are now overgrown and have been largely reclaimed for agricultural use. The outlines of the old taxiways and runways are faintly visible as farm tracks. Any remaining buildings, such as hangars or clubhouses, are in a state of severe disrepair or have been demolished. The land is not used for any aviation activities and is effectively just farmland.
This airfield was a local center for sport and agricultural aviation, not a major military or commercial airport. Its primary user was the local 'Aero Club Sombor'. Operations consisted mainly of:
- Sport flying: Glider towing, parachute jumping, and training for light aircraft pilots.
- Agricultural aviation: It served as a base for crop-dusting aircraft that serviced the vast farmlands of the Bačka region.
It is crucial to distinguish this small airfield (RS-0040) from the much larger and strategically important Sombor Military Air Base (ICAO: LYSO), located a few kilometers to the southwest, which has a concrete runway and housed significant Yugoslav Air Force units.
There are no known or credible plans to reopen or restore this specific airfield (RS-0040). Its infrastructure is non-existent, and the land has been repurposed. Any official discussions or investment plans concerning aviation in the Sombor area focus on the potential for converting the large Sombor Military Air Base (LYSO) for dual military/civilian use, particularly for cargo or low-cost passenger flights, due to its existing robust infrastructure. The revival of this small, defunct sport airfield is not considered a viable prospect.
