Approximately in the early 1990s.
The airstrip's closure is directly linked to the economic decline and downsizing of the FAP (Fabrika automobila Priboj) truck factory. FAP was a major industrial entity in former Yugoslavia, and the airstrip primarily served its business needs. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia and the subsequent economic turmoil and sanctions of the 1990s, the factory's operations drastically reduced. Consequently, the corporate airstrip became economically non-viable and fell into disuse due to a lack of traffic, funding, and maintenance.
The site is currently abandoned and in a state of disrepair. The original grass runway is completely overgrown and unusable for any aviation purposes. Satellite imagery shows the faint outline of the former runway, but the land appears to be used for agriculture or is simply unmaintained. There are no active airport facilities, hangars, or services on the site. The area is occasionally used for local, non-aviation events.
Built in 1986, the Kelovic Airstrip (also known as Priboj Airport) was primarily a corporate and utility airfield for the FAP truck factory. Its main purpose was to facilitate rapid transport for company executives, engineers, and international business partners, as well as for the urgent shipment of small, critical cargo. It featured a grass runway of approximately 800-900 meters. The airstrip was a symbol of the industrial strength and logistical capabilities of Priboj during its economic peak in the Yugoslav era. It also supported recreational aviation activities for the local aero club, 'AK FAP'.
There are significant and active plans to revive the airport. Since 2021, the Municipality of Priboj, with strong support from the Serbian government, has initiated a project to construct a new, modern airport at the same location. The plan includes building a paved runway approximately 1,100 meters long and 30 meters wide, a new control tower, and a hangar. The revived airport is intended to serve business and general aviation, catering to smaller aircraft (up to 10-12 seats). The primary goals are to support the growing Free Zone Priboj, stimulate local economic development, and boost tourism by providing better access to regional attractions like the Uvac Special Nature Reserve, Zlatar, and Zlatibor mountains. The government has allocated funds for the creation of project-technical documentation, signaling a firm commitment to moving forward with the reconstruction.
