Approximately 2018-2019. The airport was officially decommissioned to make way for a new industrial park, with major construction activities on the site beginning around this period.
Economic development and industrial conversion. The City of Kruševac designated the land for the construction of the 'New Industrial Park Kruševac' to attract foreign investment and stimulate local economic growth. The strategic decision to prioritize industrial development over the sport airfield led to the expropriation and complete redevelopment of the site.
The site has been completely transformed and is now the 'New Industrial Park Kruševac'. The runway, hangars, and all associated aviation facilities have been demolished. The area is now occupied by large, modern industrial buildings, roads, and supporting infrastructure for various manufacturing companies, including a major factory for the German company Kromberg & Schubert.
The airport was the historic home of the Aero-klub 'Mihajlo Živić', a prominent aviation club in Serbia. For decades, it served as the primary center for sport and general aviation in the Rasina District. Operations included glider flying, parachuting, pilot training for light aircraft, and agricultural aviation. The airfield was a significant community asset, hosting numerous airshows, fly-ins, and both regional and national competitions that contributed significantly to Serbia's aviation culture and heritage.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport at its original Kozhirsko Polje location due to its complete industrial redevelopment. However, there are active plans to replace it. The City of Kruševac, in collaboration with the relocated Aero-klub 'Mihajlo Živić', has identified a new site for a replacement sport airfield near the village of Čitluk, west of Kruševac. While the project has been announced and land has been allocated, the development has faced delays and a definitive timeline for the construction and opening of the new airfield is not yet confirmed as of early 2024.
