Renting a car is the most popular and flexible way to explore the islands. It is highly recommended to book your vehicle in advance, especially during peak season. An International Driving Permit is required for many foreign visitors.
Public transport is limited. Two main bus services operate from the airport: the Miyako Kyoei Bus, which runs a local route to Hirara on Miyako Island, and the Miyako Shimojishima Airport Liner, a limousine bus that connects to major resort hotels. Both services have infrequent schedules often timed with flight arrivals, so checking the latest timetable in advance is essential.
