Approximately between 2008 and 2012. A precise date is not officially recorded, as the closure was a gradual process of ceasing operations rather than a single event.
The primary reason for closure was intense and rapid urban development. The airfield was located in what is now the Mamaia Nord area, which experienced a massive real estate boom starting in the mid-2000s. The land became extremely valuable for residential and tourism projects. The expansion of the resort, with tall buildings being constructed nearby, made continued flight operations unsafe and impractical. The economic incentive to sell the land for development far outweighed its value as a small utility airfield.
The site of the former Mamaia Airfield has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. The land is now a dense urban area, part of the Mamaia Nord resort. It is covered with apartment blocks, hotels, restaurants, and other tourism-related infrastructure. There are no physical traces of the runway, hangars, or any other airfield facilities remaining. Viewing the coordinates on a current satellite map shows a fully developed residential and tourist zone.
Mamaia Airfield was a utility and general aviation airfield ('aerodrom utilitar'). It was not a commercial airport for passenger travel. Its primary operations included:
- **Agricultural Aviation:** It served as a base for crop-dusting aircraft (notably the Antonov An-2) that provided agrochemical treatments to the vast farmlands in the Dobrogea region.
- **Recreational Flying:** It was a major hub for the Romanian Aeroclub ('Aeroclubul României'). Activities included flight training for private pilot licenses, gliding, and, most famously, parachuting (skydiving).
- **Utility and Air Taxi Services:** It handled small charter flights and other utility aviation tasks.
- **Airshows and Events:** The airfield occasionally hosted local airshows and aviation-related public events.
It was a key facility for general aviation on the Romanian coast, distinct from the large international airport (Mihail Kogălniceanu - LRCK).
There are zero prospects for reopening the airfield at its original location. The land has been fully built over with permanent structures, making a return to aviation use physically impossible. General aviation and recreational flying activities for the Constanța region have since been consolidated at other airfields, primarily Tuzla Airfield (LRTZ), located south of Constanța, which has become the main hub for private and recreational aviation on the Romanian Black Sea coast.
