Late 1980s to early 1990s. The airfield was gradually decommissioned as the city expanded, with the final closure occurring after the fall of the communist regime in 1989, paving the way for new construction projects.
Urban expansion and real estate development. The Pipera area, once on the northern outskirts of Bucharest, became a prime location for commercial and residential development in the post-communist era. The land occupied by the airfield was sold and re-purposed for the construction of what is now Bucharest's main business district.
The site of the former airfield has been completely transformed and is unrecognizable today. It is now the heart of Bucharest's new central business district, a bustling area filled with high-rise office buildings, corporate headquarters, and shopping centers. Prominent landmarks on the former airfield grounds include the Globalworth Tower, SkyTower, Promenada Mall, and the headquarters of major corporations like Oracle. The area is intersected by major roads such as Calea Floreasca and Čoseaua Pipera. There are no physical remnants of the airfield.
Pipera Airfield was a historically significant center for Romanian sport aviation for over half a century. Established in the 1930s, it was primarily known as a major gliding (planorism) hub and was home to the famous 'Mircea Zorileanu' gliding school. It served as a key base for the Romanian Airclub (Aeroclubul României) and was used extensively for flight training, light aircraft operations, and national gliding competitions. The airfield played a vital role in fostering aviation culture and training generations of Romanian pilots before its closure.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land is now among the most valuable and densely developed real estate in Romania. Reopening an airport at this location is physically, financially, and logistically impossible due to the extensive urban development. Furthermore, the airspace is now integrated into the traffic patterns for the nearby Aurel Vlaicu International Airport (BÄneasa).
