Onceşti Airfield

This is typically due to economic factors, the owner no longer being active in aviation, a change in land ownership, or simply a lack of continued maintenance required to keep the strip safe and usable for aircraft.

The site is no longer an active airfield. Satellite imagery shows that the distinct outline of the grass runway is still visible in the field. However, it is no longer maintained for aviation. The surface appears overgrown, and tracks from farm vehicles suggest it is now used as an access path for the surrounding agricultural land. The site has effectively reverted to being part of the adjacent farmland.

Onceşti Airfield held local significance for the recreational and general aviation community in the Maramureș region. It was not a commercial or military airport. Its primary function was to serve as a base for private pilots flying light aircraft, ultralights, and possibly motor gliders. Operations were limited to VFR (Visual Flight Rules) flights for leisure, sport, and potentially agricultural purposes like crop dusting, although there is no specific evidence of the latter. The airfield consisted of a single grass runway, approximately 650-700 meters long, with no significant infrastructure like hangars, a terminal, or a control tower.

There are no known or publicly announced plans to reopen Onceşti Airfield. Any potential for reopening would depend entirely on a private individual or a local aviation club taking the initiative to purchase or lease the land, restore the runway surface, and manage the facility. Given its informal nature and the lack of any current activity, the prospects for reopening are considered very low to non-existent.
