Approximately early 1990s. No exact date is officially recorded, but the airfield ceased operations following the fall of Romania's communist regime in 1989 and the subsequent economic transition.
Primarily economic reasons. The airfield was part of a state-run network ('Aviația Utilitară') that served large, state-owned collective farms. After the 1989 Romanian Revolution, these collective farms were dismantled and the agricultural sector was privatized. This eliminated the demand for centralized, state-sponsored aerial application services, making small, specialized airfields like Luieriu economically unviable and leading to their abandonment.
The airfield is completely abandoned and defunct. Satellite imagery of the coordinates reveals that the site has reverted to agricultural land. The faint outline of the former unpaved, grass runway is still visible, but there are no remaining buildings, hangars, markings, or any other aviation-related infrastructure. The land appears to be used as pasture or is left fallow.
Luieriu Agricultural Airfield was a typical 'aerodrom utilitar' (utility airfield) from the communist era. Its sole purpose was to support local agriculture in the Mureș County region. It served as a base for utility aircraft, most commonly the Antonov An-2, which performed aerial application tasks such as crop dusting, pest control, and fertilization over the vast collective farmlands. The airfield was a small but integral part of a nationwide infrastructure designed to support Romania's centrally planned agricultural economy.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Luieriu Agricultural Airfield. The original purpose for its existence is gone, and the site lacks the basic infrastructure required for modern general or commercial aviation. Given its remote location and the absence of any economic driver, reopening is considered highly unlikely.
