The airfield appears to have closed gradually between 2016 and 2019. There was no single, officially announced closure date. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows a well-maintained grass runway in 2016, but by 2019, the land was visibly being reclaimed for agriculture. Its national identifier (RO-0076) is no longer listed on the Romanian Civil Aeronautical Authority's (AACR) list of certified aerodromes.
The closure was most likely due to economic reasons or a change in private ownership. Small, private airfields of this type often rely on the financial support and interest of their owners and a small community of pilots. Without sufficient activity to cover maintenance and certification costs, they often fall into disuse. The land was subsequently converted back to agricultural use, which is a common outcome for defunct private grass strips.
The site of the former Cremenari Airfield has been fully converted back into agricultural land. The former grass runway and surrounding airport grounds are now a cultivated farm field, with plowing lines clearly visible across the old runway path in recent satellite images. There are no remaining signs of airport infrastructure such as hangars, wind socks, or markings.
Cremenari Airfield was a small, private airfield primarily used for general aviation, specifically for ultralight (ULM) and light-sport aircraft (LSA). It served the local recreational flying community in Vâlcea County. It had no military or commercial significance and never handled scheduled passenger or cargo traffic. Its importance was limited to being a local hub for private pilots and flight enthusiasts.
There are no known plans, proposals, or prospects for reopening the airfield. Given that the land has been completely repurposed for agriculture, re-establishing an airfield would require acquiring the land, significant ground preparation to create a new runway, and undergoing a full certification process with the Romanian authorities. The probability of this happening is considered extremely low.
