Late 1990s to early 2000s. While an exact official date is not publicly documented, aviation records and historical accounts indicate it ceased operations around this period.
The airport was closed primarily due to infrastructural and logistical consolidation. Its role was made redundant by the development of superior ground transportation, specifically the modern Dukhan Highway connecting the industrial city to Doha, and the expansion of Qatar's main international airports. The operational needs of the energy sector, which the airport served, also shifted towards more flexible helicopter services for transporting personnel to and from offshore rigs and remote onshore locations.
The airport is completely closed and non-operational. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms the site is derelict. The runway and taxiways, though still clearly visible, are in a state of severe disrepair, with sand encroachment and vehicle tracks crossing them. The surrounding area and former apron are now integrated into the vast industrial operations of QatarEnergy, likely being used for vehicle parking, material storage, or as a laydown yard. The facility is not maintained for any aviation purposes.
Dukhan Airport was historically vital for the development and operation of Qatar's oil and gas industry. Established and operated by Qatar Petroleum (now QatarEnergy), it served as the primary air link for the Dukhan oil fields, which were the first to be discovered in the country. The airport was crucial for transporting company executives, engineers, specialized equipment, and urgent supplies to and from the remote western region of Qatar. It primarily handled corporate and charter flights, using aircraft suitable for its short runway, and was instrumental in supporting the growth that formed the foundation of Qatar's modern economy.
There are no known or published plans to reopen Dukhan Airport. Its function has been entirely and more efficiently superseded by the combination of Hamad International Airport (OTHH) for international and domestic travel, and a robust network of helipads for the energy sector's specific needs. Given the land's strategic value for the expansion of QatarEnergy's industrial facilities, any prospect for reopening is considered non-existent.
