The exact closure date is not officially documented. Analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the aerodrome fell into disuse and ceased maintenance sometime between 2013 and 2016. Its permanent closure was effectively sealed around 2018-2019 when a large industrial building was constructed at the northern end of the runway, making it unusable.
The closure was a result of economic abandonment and subsequent urban/industrial encroachment. There is no record of a specific incident, accident, or military conversion leading to the closure. It appears the private airfield ceased operations due to a lack of financial viability or use, leading to its neglect. The valuable land was then sold and re-zoned for industrial development, which has since expanded onto the former airfield grounds.
The site is currently abandoned as an airport and is being repurposed for industrial use. The asphalt runway remains visible but is in a state of advanced disrepair, with significant vegetation growing through cracks in the pavement. The northern approach and threshold of the runway are permanently obstructed by a large industrial warehouse. The surrounding area is now part of a developing industrial zone, with other commercial properties nearby.
Aeródromo de Villa Hayes was a private general aviation airfield that primarily served the local community. It was the home of the 'Aeroclub de Villa Hayes' (Villa Hayes Flying Club), acting as a hub for recreational flying, flight training, and private aviation. Operations consisted of light single-engine and twin-engine aircraft. Its location near the Paraguayan capital, Asunción, and the main highway to Argentina (Ruta PY09) made it a convenient base for private pilots and small business travel. It did not handle scheduled commercial passenger services or significant military operations.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the aerodrome. The physical obstruction of the runway by a permanent industrial structure, combined with the ongoing industrial development of the surrounding area, makes a return to aviation operations virtually impossible. The land is now more valuable for industrial purposes than for general aviation.
