Approximately early to mid-2010s. There is no exact official date of closure, as the airfield likely fell into disuse gradually. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows a clearly defined and maintained grass runway in the late 2000s, which becomes progressively overgrown and indistinct throughout the 2010s, indicating a cessation of maintenance and activity during that period.
Economic reasons and lack of use. As a small, private airstrip, its operation was dependent on the financial viability and need for its owner(s). Such airfields often close when the cost of maintenance (mowing, grading, insurance) outweighs their utility, or when the owner no longer operates an aircraft. There is no evidence to suggest closure was due to a specific accident, military conversion, or government order; gradual abandonment is the most likely cause.
The site of the former aerodrome is completely abandoned and has reverted to nature. High-resolution satellite imagery shows the faint outline of the former grass runway, but it is now entirely overgrown with grass and shrubs, making it indistinguishable from the surrounding agricultural land and pasture. There are no remaining airport facilities, such as hangars, terminals, or markings. The land appears to be unused or has been integrated into adjacent farmland.
The aerodrome was a small, private airstrip primarily serving general aviation. Its operations would have been limited to light, single-engine aircraft for personal or business travel, and potentially agricultural aviation (crop dusting), which is common in this agricultural region of Paraguay's Itapúa Department. It did not handle commercial passenger or cargo flights and had no significant military role. Its importance was strictly localized, providing basic air access for a small number of private users with connections to the Coronel Bogado area.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the aerodrome. Given its complete state of disrepair and the fact that the land is likely privately owned, a significant investment would be required to clear, grade, and re-establish the runway and any necessary facilities. Without a compelling economic or strategic reason, and in the absence of any official announcements from Paraguay's Dirección Nacional de Aeronáutica Civil (DINAC) or local authorities, the reopening of PY-0023 is considered highly improbable.
