Approximately late 2017 to early 2018. Satellite imagery shows the intact airfield in 2016, but by mid-2018, the land was cleared and construction for a new development was underway. Aviation community discussions confirm the closure occurred during this period.
Economic reasons and urban development. The land on which the airfield was located was sold for a large-scale commercial real estate project. The prime location near the N125 road and the growing town of Armação de Pêra made it more valuable for retail development than for a small, private airfield.
The site has been completely and permanently redeveloped. The former airfield no longer exists. The land is now occupied by a large retail park and commercial area. Key tenants at the location (37.110756, -8.34417) include large supermarkets such as Continente Modelo and Aldi, along with other stores, extensive parking lots, and new access roads. All traces of the former runway and aviation infrastructure have been erased.
The Armação de Pêra Airfield was a private aerodrome dedicated to ultralight (ULM/microlight) aircraft. Its significance was primarily local, serving as a key hub for the recreational and sport aviation community in the central Algarve region. It was home to a local flying club and provided a base for private ULM pilots to operate from. Operations consisted of flight training, recreational flying by local and visiting pilots, and potentially tourist sightseeing flights over the popular Algarve coastline. It was a simple facility, likely with a single unpaved (grass/dirt) runway and basic hangar facilities, characteristic of many ULM airfields.
Zero. The complete redevelopment of the site into a major commercial and retail zone makes reopening the airfield at this location impossible. The land is permanently repurposed, and there are no known plans or prospects for establishing a new airfield in the immediate vicinity to replace it.
Private airfield open to the public. Certified for Ultra-lights, though runway in very bad condition. Likely it has been left unused and unattended for the last few years.
