Approximately between 2016 and 2018. The airfield's operator, the Aero Clube de Sines, became inactive around 2015, which led to the gradual abandonment of the site. Satellite imagery from 2018 clearly shows the runway in a state of disuse and neglect, suggesting operations had ceased by then.
Economic reasons, stemming from the cessation of activities by its sole operator, the Aero Clube de Sines. With the local aero club no longer active, there was no entity to manage, maintain, or fund the airfield, leading to its closure and subsequent decay. The closure was not the result of a major accident, military conversion, or regulatory action.
The site is abandoned and derelict. The paved runway (oriented 02/20) and associated taxiways are still physically present but are in a state of severe disrepair. The asphalt is cracked and heavily overgrown with weeds and grass. The buildings on site, which were likely hangars and a clubhouse, also appear to be abandoned. The property is not currently being used for any other purpose and is slowly being reclaimed by nature.
Pista da Sonega was a local airfield dedicated to general aviation, primarily serving ultralight (ULM/microlight) aircraft. Its main function was to provide a base for the Aero Clube de Sines, supporting recreational flying and flight training for the local community. While it was the primary aviation facility in the immediate vicinity of Sines, it never handled commercial, cargo, or significant military operations. Its significance was purely local and recreational.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Pista da Sonega. Any discussions regarding aviation infrastructure for the Sines region focus on the potential development of a new, much larger airport intended to support the cargo and logistics operations of the Port of Sines. Given the small size, poor condition, and private recreational history of Pista da Sonega, its renovation and reopening are considered highly unlikely.
