The airfield ceased to be a certified aerodrome around the late 2010s. There is no single official date of closure, as it was a gradual process of falling into disuse and subsequently losing its certification from the Portuguese Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC - Autoridade Nacional da Aviação Civil).
The closure was primarily due to economic and operational reasons. The private entity or aero club responsible for its management and maintenance likely ceased its activities. Without a certified operator to ensure the runway, markings, and facilities met regulatory and safety standards, its certification lapsed. It was not closed due to a specific accident, environmental issue, or military conversion.
The site is officially closed and uncertified for all general aviation traffic. The paved runway and some basic structures remain, but they are not maintained for aviation use. Despite its official closure, due to its strategic importance, the location is still occasionally used by ANEPC as a temporary support point for firefighting helicopters during critical fire events. This use is specific to emergency services and does not signify that the airfield is operational in any regular capacity.
Aeródromo de Vila Meã was a small airfield primarily used for recreational and general aviation, with a particular focus on ultralight aircraft (ULM). Its most critical historical significance was its strategic use as a 'Centro de Meios Aéreos' (CMA - Air Assets Center) for emergency services. During Portugal's intense wildfire seasons, particularly the devastating fires of 2017 that heavily impacted the Mortágua region, this airfield served as a vital forward operating base for firefighting aircraft and helicopters managed by the Autoridade Nacional de Emergência e Proteção Civil (ANEPC). Its location was crucial for rapid response and refueling operations in central Portugal.
There are currently no known public plans or active projects to reopen and recertify the Aeródromo de Vila Meã. Reopening would require a significant investment from a private entity or the local municipality to bring the runway, facilities, and safety procedures up to current ANAC standards. Given the high costs and the niche nature of its previous operations, a reopening in the near future is considered unlikely.
Once a public airfield certified for all sorts of Ga traffic, it was closed in 2007 to give way for the creation of a professional driving school (with road markings replacing the runway markings as can be seen in the satellite imagery).
