Approximately 1948
The airfield was closed following the end of the British Mandate for Palestine and the withdrawal of the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1948. The subsequent 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the establishment of the 1949 Armistice Line (Green Line), which bisected the airfield's grounds, made its continued operation as a unified airport impossible.
The site of the former airfield is now defunct and non-operational. It is bisected by the Green Line, the 1949 Armistice demarcation line between Israel and the West Bank. The Israeli West Bank barrier also runs across parts of the former airfield. Remnants of the original runways and taxiways are still visible on satellite imagery, but the land is primarily used for agriculture by both Israeli and Palestinian communities on their respective sides of the line. There are no remaining airport facilities or infrastructure in use.
Muqeible Airfield, known historically as RAF Muqeible, was a major Royal Air Force station during the British Mandate for Palestine. Constructed in the 1930s and significantly expanded during World War II, it was a key strategic asset in the Middle East. It hosted numerous RAF and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) squadrons, including No. 6, No. 32, No. 142, No. 208, and No. 451 Squadron RAAF. The airfield operated various aircraft, including Hawker Hurricanes, Supermarine Spitfires, and de Havilland Mosquitoes. It played a crucial role in air defense, reconnaissance, and offensive operations in the region during WWII and was used for internal security operations during the Mandate period until the British withdrawal.
There are no known plans or realistic prospects for reopening Muqeible Airfield. Its location straddling the politically sensitive Green Line, the construction of the Israeli West Bank barrier across the site, and the conversion of the land to agricultural use make its redevelopment as an airport politically and logistically infeasible.
