The airport was officially closed between 2004 and 2006. The last known aeronautical chart to depict the active airport was the San Juan Terminal Area Chart from 2004. By 2006, aerial imagery showed large, painted 'X' symbols on the runway, the standard visual indicator for a permanently closed runway.
The closure was driven by economic and real estate development factors. The land occupied by the airstrip became more valuable for the expansion of the Palmas del Mar resort community than for its use as an airfield. The growing demand for luxury housing, condominiums, and other resort amenities led to the decision to repurpose the strategically located land. Additionally, the opening of the nearby José Aponte de la Torre Airport (RVR) in Ceiba to public use after the closure of the Roosevelt Roads Naval Station provided a larger, more capable alternative for regional air traffic, making the small private airstrip redundant.
The site of the former airstrip has been completely redeveloped and is now unrecognizable as an airport. The land has been fully integrated into the Palmas del Mar resort. A major road, Palmas Drive, now runs along the approximate centerline of the former runway. The area is now occupied by luxury residential developments, most notably The Marbella Club condominiums, private homes, and portions of the resort's golf course. There are no visible remnants of the runway, taxiways, or any aviation facilities.
The Palmas del Mar Airstrip was a private-use airport established in the 1970s to serve the exclusive Palmas del Mar resort community in Humacao. It featured a single paved runway, approximately 3,200 feet long, designated as Runway 10/28. Its primary function was to provide convenient, direct air access for residents, guests, and potential real estate buyers, handling general aviation traffic such as small private planes and charter flights. For a period, it also supported scheduled commercial operations. For example, in the early 1980s, commuter airline Crown Air / Dorado Wings operated regular flights connecting Palmas del Mar with San Juan's Luis Muñoz MarĂn International Airport (SJU), making it an important transportation link for the burgeoning resort.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the Palmas del Mar Airstrip. The land has been permanently and extensively repurposed with high-value residential and transportation infrastructure. The comprehensive redevelopment makes any future aviation use at this specific location impossible. The region's general and commercial aviation needs are adequately served by the José Aponte de la Torre Airport (RVR) in nearby Ceiba.
