Approximately late 1998.
The airport was catastrophically damaged by Hurricane Georges, which struck Puerto Rico in September 1998. The owners of the Palmas del Mar resort, which the airport served, likely determined that the cost of rebuilding and modernizing the facility was not economically viable. The permanent closure was an economic decision following the natural disaster.
The airport is permanently closed and abandoned. The outline of the single runway is still clearly visible in satellite imagery, but it is severely deteriorated and overgrown with vegetation. A large portion of the former airport property and adjacent land has been redeveloped and is now the site of the Palmas del Mar Solar Park, a large-scale solar energy farm.
Note on Identity: The identifier PR-0010 and the name 'Boqueron Airport' for this location appear to be an error in some unofficial aviation databases. The airport at these coordinates was officially known as Palmas del Mar Airport (FAA LID: X63). Boquerón is a different region on the opposite (southwest) coast of Puerto Rico.
When active, Palmas del Mar Airport was a privately owned, public-use airport. Its primary purpose was to serve the large, upscale Palmas del Mar resort community located in the neighboring municipality of Humacao. It catered exclusively to general aviation and small charter aircraft, providing a convenient access point for affluent tourists, residents, and prospective real estate investors to fly directly to the resort, bypassing the larger San Juan airport. The airport featured a single paved runway (estimated at 3,200 feet) and basic facilities for private aircraft.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The redevelopment of the land for a solar farm presents a significant physical and financial barrier to restoring the runway. Furthermore, the general aviation needs of the region are adequately served by the nearby Humacao Airport (IATA: HUC), making the revival of the former Palmas del Mar Airport both unnecessary and economically unfeasible.
