Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately early 1990s. The airfield was not officially closed on a specific date but fell into disuse following the political and economic changes in Poland after 1989.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons. The airfield was an 'agrolotnisko' (agricultural airstrip) operated by the state-owned agricultural aviation enterprise, Zakład Usług Agrolotniczych (ZUA). With the transition from a communist state-controlled economy to a market economy, the ZUA was dissolved, and its nationwide network of small, specialized airstrips was no longer financially viable. The demand for large-scale, state-run aerial application services collapsed, leading to the abandonment of sites like Kiełczynek.

Current Status

The site is completely abandoned and defunct as an airfield. The former grass runway is now overgrown and has been largely reclaimed by the surrounding agricultural fields, with its outline only faintly visible on satellite imagery. There are no remaining aviation infrastructures such as hangars, fuel depots, or administrative buildings. Furthermore, a wind farm has been constructed in the vicinity, with large wind turbines now presenting significant obstacles that would prevent any future aviation use.

Historical Significance

Kiełczynek Airfield's significance lies in its role as a component of Poland's state-run agricultural infrastructure during the Polish People's Republic (PRL) era. It was exclusively used for agricultural aviation. Operations consisted of crop dusting, fertilizing, and pest control for the large collective farms in the region. The primary aircraft types that would have operated from this grass strip were the workhorses of Polish agricultural aviation: the Antonov An-2 and the PZL-106 Kruk.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Kiełczynek Airfield. The original economic purpose for its existence is obsolete, the land has been repurposed for agriculture, and the presence of the nearby wind farm makes the location permanently unsuitable for safe flight operations.
