Approximately early 2000s (around 2002-2003). While aviation activities ceased around this time, the land was officially sold for redevelopment by the Polish Military Property Agency (Agencja Mienia Wojskowego) in the subsequent years, finalizing its closure.
Economic reasons. The land was deemed more valuable for industrial development than for its use as a sports airfield. The Aeroclub that operated there ceased its activities, and the site was sold to private investors to create an industrial park and special economic zone, effectively ending its aviation purpose.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now an industrial and commercial zone. The area is occupied by large manufacturing plants (such as the Dr. Schumacher factory) and a significant solar power farm. While the faint outline of the former grass runways can still be discerned from satellite imagery, the land is no longer suitable or available for any aviation activities.
The airport has a significant multi-layered history. It was originally built by Germany before World War II and known as 'Flugplatz Lauban'. During the war, it served as a base for the Luftwaffe, used for training and as a forward airfield for operations on the Eastern Front. After WWII, the territory became part of Poland, and the airfield was taken over by the Polish military. From 1961, it was transferred to civilian use and became a key satellite airfield for the Aeroklub Jeleniogórski (Jelenia Góra Aeroclub). For several decades, it was actively used for general aviation, primarily for glider training and sports flying.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The extensive and permanent industrial development on the site, including large factories and a solar farm, makes a return to aviation use virtually impossible.
