Approximately early to mid-1990s. The exact date is not documented, but its closure coincides with the systemic economic and political changes in Poland following the end of the communist era in 1989.
Economic reasons and systemic change. The airstrip was an agricultural aviation base ('lądowisko rolnicze') primarily serving the state-owned farms (Państwowe Gospodarstwo Rolne - PGR) of the Polish People's Republic. With the dissolution of the PGR system in the early 1990s, the airstrip lost its primary purpose and economic viability. The land was subsequently privatized and reverted to its primary agricultural use.
The site has been fully reclaimed for agriculture. Satellite imagery of the coordinates reveals the faint outline of the former grass runway, which is now part of a larger, actively cultivated farm field. All associated infrastructure, such as hangars or service buildings, has been removed. The only public remnant of its past is a nearby road in the village of Łysiny named 'ul. Lotnicza' (Aviation Street).
The Wschowa-Łysiny airstrip was a vital piece of local agricultural infrastructure during the PRL era. Its sole purpose was to support large-scale farming operations in the Wschowa region. It handled agricultural aircraft, such as the PZL-106 Kruk, PZL-M18 Dromader, and possibly the Antonov An-2, for tasks like crop dusting, fertilization, and pest control. It held no military or passenger transport significance and was purely a functional base for agricultural aviation.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airstrip. The land is privately owned farmland, and the original purpose for the airfield is now obsolete. The significant cost of reacquiring the land and rebuilding infrastructure for modern general aviation, combined with a lack of clear demand, makes any prospect of reopening extremely unlikely.
