The airstrip was officially removed from the Polish civil aviation registry (ewidencja lądowisk) around 2012. It had ceased to function as an active military facility many years prior, following the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s.
The closure stemmed from a loss of strategic military purpose and subsequent economic non-viability. Originally a military highway strip, its importance vanished after the Cold War. Its later function as a civil airstrip was likely unsustainable due to the high cost of maintenance, regulatory compliance, and its close proximity to the rapidly developing Warsaw-Modlin Airport (WMI), which serves as the primary hub for the region.
The site is officially closed to all air traffic. The 2,200-meter paved runway remains physically intact but is unmaintained and shows signs of degradation. The location has become a popular, though largely illegal and unregulated, hub for motorsport enthusiasts. It is widely used for car drifting, drag racing, and motorcycle training, a fact well-documented in numerous online videos. The area is also used for drone flying and other recreational activities. The land is owned by the State Treasury and managed by the National Support Centre for Agriculture (KOWR).
Kroczewo's primary historical role was as a 'Drogowy Odcinek Lotniskowy' (DOL), a strategic highway strip built during the Cold War (likely in the 1960s) for the Polish Air Force. It was designed as an emergency/dispersal runway for military aircraft from the nearby Modlin Air Base, capable of handling jet fighters (like MiG and Su variants) and transport planes. This was a common Warsaw Pact strategy to ensure air power continuity if main airbases were attacked. After its military role diminished, it was registered as a civil airstrip with the ICAO code PL-0047 and saw limited use for general aviation, including ultralights and agricultural aircraft.
There are no official or funded plans to reopen Kroczewo as an airstrip. Its revival for aviation is considered highly unlikely due to the overwhelming presence and capacity of the nearby Warsaw-Modlin Airport. There have been local discussions and proposals to formalize its current use by converting it into a legal motorsport facility or 'Moto Park' to ensure safety and regulation, but these ideas have not materialized into concrete projects. For the foreseeable future, the site is expected to remain in its current state as an unofficial, multi-purpose recreational and motorsport area.
