Approximately 2008. The airfield ceased operations after the land was sold for development around 2007-2008, and it was subsequently de-registered from the Polish Civil Aviation Authority (ULC) registry.
Economic reasons and urban development. The land, which was owned and operated by the Łódź Aeroclub (Aeroklub Łódzki), was sold to a private developer for the construction of a large logistics and industrial park. The value of the land for commercial development far exceeded its viability as a general aviation airfield, leading to its permanent closure.
The site has been completely redeveloped and no longer exists as an airfield. The land is now occupied by a large industrial and logistics complex, most notably the 'Panattoni Park Łódź West' and other commercial warehouses. The former grass runways, hangars, and airfield infrastructure have been entirely replaced by large industrial buildings, access roads, and parking lots. There are no remaining traces of its previous aviation use.
The site, often known locally as Lotnisko Rąbień, was a civil airfield (lądowisko) of major importance for general aviation in the Łódź region. From the 1970s until its closure, it served as the primary base for the glider and parachute sections of the Łódź Aeroclub. For decades, it was the main training ground for countless glider pilots and parachutists in central Poland. Operations primarily consisted of glider flights (using both winch-launch and aero-tow methods), parachute jumps (often from aircraft like the Antonov An-2), and training on other light aircraft. It was a vibrant hub for sport and recreational aviation.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport. The original site has been permanently and completely converted to industrial use, making any future aviation activity at this specific location impossible. The Łódź Aeroclub, the former operator, consolidated its remaining activities at the main Łódź Władysław Reymont Airport (ICAO: EPLL).
