The airport did not have a formal, publicly announced closure date. As a private airstrip, it gradually fell into disuse. Regular operations are believed to have ceased around the early to mid-2010s.
The cessation of operations was primarily due to economic and logistical reasons. Key factors included: the high operational and maintenance costs of a private airfield for infrequent flights; improved national road infrastructure (motorways) which made ground travel to the nearest commercial airport more efficient; and the close proximity (approx. 35 km) of the Shaikh Zayed International Airport (ICAO: OPRK) in Rahim Yar Khan, which ultimately made the private strip redundant and not cost-effective.
The site is currently dormant but physically intact. Satellite imagery shows the paved runway, taxiway, and a small apron are still visible and appear to be in a maintained condition, free from encroachment or repurposing. However, there are no signs of active aviation operations. The airfield remains part of the Fauji Fertilizer Company's property but is not used as a functional airport. It might be kept in a state of preservation for potential emergency use.
This was a private airstrip, locally known as the FFC Airstrip or Sadiqabad Airport, built, owned, and operated by the Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC). Its sole purpose was to facilitate corporate travel for FFC's large fertilizer manufacturing complex in Sadiqabad. The airport handled private and chartered aircraft (such as Beechcraft King Airs) transporting company executives, VIPs, and essential personnel between Sadiqabad and major hubs like Karachi and Islamabad. It was never a public airport and did not handle any scheduled commercial passenger or cargo traffic.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening the airport for either private or public use. The economic and logistical factors that led to its disuse remain valid. The region is adequately served by the nearby Shaikh Zayed International Airport in Rahim Yar Khan. Any reopening would require significant investment to upgrade facilities to modern Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) standards, which is considered highly unlikely.
