Circa 2014-2015. The exact date is not publicly documented, but the closure coincides with the land acquisition and commencement of construction for the Bahria Town Karachi real estate project.
Land acquisition for large-scale urban development. The airstrip and its surrounding undeveloped land were acquired by the private real estate developer Bahria Town for the construction of 'Bahria Town Karachi,' a massive gated community. The airport's existence was incompatible with the master plan for the new city, leading to its permanent closure.
The physical asphalt runway remains largely intact but is permanently non-operational for aviation. The site has been completely absorbed into the Bahria Town Karachi housing scheme. The former runway is now surrounded by residential sectors, commercial buildings, parks, and roads. It is frequently and informally used by residents and car enthusiasts for recreational driving, car meets, and unsanctioned drag racing, effectively serving as an oversized, abandoned road within the community.
Wateji Airstrip was a private airfield used for general aviation. Prior to its closure, it was located in a relatively remote and undeveloped area on the outskirts of Karachi. It primarily served light, single-engine and twin-engine aircraft for private individuals, flying clubs, or corporate entities. Operations were limited to VFR (Visual Flight Rules) conditions, and it served as a basic facility for recreational flying and private transport rather than for commercial or military purposes.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airstrip. The dense urban development that now surrounds and encroaches upon the old runway makes any future aviation activity impossible due to safety regulations, noise abatement issues, and physical obstructions. The land value for real estate far exceeds its value as a general aviation airport, and its closure is considered permanent.
abandoned airfield and no longer in use.
