Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The exact closure date is not officially documented, but the airfield ceased operations gradually, likely during the 1980s or early 1990s. Its decline corresponds with the rapid urban expansion of Valencia City.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for the closure was urban encroachment. As Valencia grew from a municipality into a city, the land occupied by the airfield became highly valuable for residential and commercial development. The expansion of the city's infrastructure, including housing, businesses, and roads, eventually overtook the airfield grounds, making its operation untenable and unsafe. Its role was also diminished by improvements in land transportation and the use of larger, more distant airports for corporate travel.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped and is now fully integrated into the urban fabric of Valencia City. The original runway has been paved and is now a major thoroughfare called 'Airport Road'. The area is now a densely populated zone with numerous residences, schools, and commercial establishments built on and around the former airfield.

Historical Significance

Valencia Airfield was a private, unpaved airstrip that served as a vital logistical hub for the agricultural industry in Bukidnon, which is known as the food basket of Mindanao. It was not a commercial airport with scheduled passenger flights. Its main users were agricultural corporations, such as the Philippine Packing Corporation (now Del Monte Philippines), for crop-dusting operations, executive transport, and moving high-value cargo. The airfield played a significant role in connecting the remote, agriculturally-rich province to major business centers before the national highway system was fully modernized.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening Valencia Airfield at its original location, as the site is now a developed part of the city. However, there are long-standing plans to provide the province of Bukidnon with its own commercial airport. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the provincial government are pursuing the construction of the 'Bukidnon Airport' (IATA: N/A, ICAO: RPMB) at a new site in the municipality of Don Carlos, south of Valencia. This project, once completed, will serve the entire province for commercial passenger and cargo flights, effectively replacing the need that the old Valencia Airfield once met.
