Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately between 2018 and 2020. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was still intact but falling into disuse in the mid-2010s, with major construction and redevelopment on the site beginning around 2018 and largely covering the former runway by 2020.

Reason for Closure

Land redevelopment for industrial use. The airfield was situated on valuable land owned by the ANFLO Group (parent company of TADECO). The company repurposed the site to develop the ANFLO Industrial Estate (AIE), a large-scale logistics and manufacturing hub. The economic value of the land for industrial development, including cold storage and processing plants, surpassed its utility as a private airstrip.

Current Status

The former airfield site has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of the ANFLO Industrial Estate (AIE). The runway, taxiways, and hangar areas have been demolished and built over. The location now hosts modern industrial facilities, including the TADECO-Avocado and Processed Banana Plant, large cold storage warehouses, and other logistics and manufacturing buildings. The land is actively used for industrial and commercial purposes, serving the Davao International Container Terminal (DICT) located nearby.

Historical Significance

Licanan Airfield was a private airstrip primarily owned and operated by the Tagum Agricultural Development Company (TADECO), one of the largest banana producers in the Philippines. Its historical significance is tied directly to the region's agricultural industry. For several decades, the airfield was a critical piece of infrastructure for TADECO's operations, handling:

- **Agricultural Aviation:** It served as a base for a fleet of crop-dusting aircraft used to spray the vast surrounding banana plantations.
- **Corporate Transport:** The airstrip was used for private flights, transporting company executives, VIPs, and personnel between its operations in Mindanao and other parts of the country.
- **Logistics and Support:** It facilitated the rapid transport of specialized parts, equipment, and urgent supplies for the plantation and its facilities. The unofficial ICAO code 'PH-0720' was likely used for flight planning software and internal company records, as it was not a public airport with an official 'RPxx' code from the CAAP.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Licanan Airfield. The site has been permanently and irreversibly converted to a high-value industrial park. The infrastructure of the airport has been completely removed. Any regional aviation needs are served by the Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO) in Davao City, approximately 20-25 kilometers to the southwest.
