The airfield was never a fully operational public airport in the modern sense. It ceased to function as an airstrip and was formally absorbed into the adjacent military camp following the Battle of Marawi in 2017. While it had been under military control for decades, its use as a landing strip effectively ended around this period as the land was re-purposed.
Military Conversion and Strategic Redevelopment. The airfield was located within the perimeter of the Philippine Army's Camp Ranao. After its critical role during the 2017 siege, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) fully integrated the land into the camp's infrastructure. The area formerly occupied by the runway was redeveloped with permanent military buildings, roads, and facilities to support the expanded presence of the 103rd Infantry Brigade.
The site is no longer an airfield. The land has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of Camp Ranao, the headquarters of the Philippine Army's 103rd Infantry Brigade. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms that the former runway area is now occupied by barracks, administrative buildings, motor pools, and internal road networks. There are no remaining aviation facilities.
Dansalan Airfield, also known as Marawi Airfield, was historically a small, unpaved airstrip primarily used for government, military, and limited general aviation flights. Its most significant period of operation was during the 2017 Battle of Marawi. It became the primary logistical lifeline for the AFP. Military transport aircraft, including C-130 Hercules and C-295s, used the short runway to ferry troops, deliver ammunition and supplies, and evacuate wounded soldiers. Its strategic location was instrumental in the government's ability to sustain the five-month-long operation to retake the city from ISIS-affiliated militants.
There are zero prospects for reopening Dansalan Airfield at its original location. The site has been permanently repurposed for military use. However, there are separate, ongoing plans and proposals to build a new, modern commercial airport to serve Marawi City and the province of Lanao del Sur. Task Force Bangon Marawi and the provincial government have identified potential sites in nearby municipalities (such as Saguiaran) for the construction of a new airport, recognizing the need for better air connectivity for the region's economic recovery and development. These plans are for a completely new facility, not the revival of the old Dansalan Airfield.
