Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The airstrip was closed to civilian traffic and repurposed for military use, likely in the late 1970s or early 1980s. An exact public date of closure is not well-documented as it was a gradual conversion rather than an abrupt shutdown.

Reason for Closure

Military Conversion. The primary reason for its closure to the public was its conversion into a strategic military base. The land was repurposed to establish Camp Osito D. Bahian, which became the headquarters for the Philippine Army's 403rd Infantry 'Peacemaker' Brigade. This was part of a broader military strategy to establish command centers in key provincial areas to address insurgency concerns in Mindanao during that era.

Current Status

The site is currently an active military installation, Camp Osito D. Bahian, headquarters of the 403rd Infantry Brigade. The original runway is still clearly visible from satellite imagery but is no longer used for fixed-wing aircraft. It now functions as a military parade ground, a staging area for military vehicles, a site for drills, and a landing zone for military helicopters. Barracks, administrative buildings, and other military facilities have been constructed on the property surrounding the former runway.

Historical Significance

Nasuli (Bangcud) Airstrip served as a secondary airfield for the landlocked province of Bukidnon. When active, it primarily supported general aviation, private aircraft, and agricultural aviation services (e.g., crop dusting for the region's vast plantations). It played a role in connecting the agricultural heartland of Bukidnon for business and logistics purposes before the road infrastructure was fully developed. It was not a major commercial airport for passenger airlines like Philippine Airlines, which would have used the larger, now-also-defunct, Malaybalay Airport located closer to the city proper.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the Nasuli (Bangcud) Airstrip for civilian or commercial use. Its status as a critical and active military headquarters makes its conversion back to a civilian airport unfeasible. All government and private sector efforts for aviation in the province are focused on the new, much larger Bukidnon Airport (IATA: BKD), which is under construction in the municipality of Don Carlos, south of Malaybalay. This new airport is intended to be the primary gateway for the entire province.
