Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The airport was officially and permanently closed following Presidential Proclamation No. 1178, signed on September 23, 1998. Flight operations likely ceased in or around that year.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for closure was its conversion into a military facility. The land was officially reserved by the presidential proclamation to become the headquarters for the 403rd Infantry 'Peacemaker' Brigade of the Philippine Army. Contributing factors likely included the airport's limited capacity (a short, likely unpaved runway) which made it unsuitable for modern commercial aircraft, and the proximity of the more capable Lumbia Airport (now replaced by Laguindingan Airport) in Cagayan de Oro, which served as the main air gateway for Northern Mindanao.

Current Status

The site of the former airport is now fully occupied by Camp Osito D. Bahian, the headquarters of the 403rd Infantry Brigade, Philippine Army. The former runway and airport grounds have been repurposed for military use, including parade grounds, barracks, administrative buildings, and internal roads within the camp.

Historical Significance

As a feeder airport, it served as a vital air link for the landlocked province of Bukidnon for several decades. It primarily handled general aviation (private aircraft), government flights, and potentially some limited charter or agricultural aviation services. It was crucial for connecting the provincial capital to other parts of the country before the improvement of the national highway system, facilitating faster travel for government officials and business interests in the region's vast agricultural sector. It was never a major commercial hub for large passenger airlines.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening the original Malaybalay Airport, as it is now an active and permanent military installation. However, to serve the province's air travel needs, a new, modern airport is under construction in a different location. The Bukidnon Airport (officially the Don Carlos Airport) is being built in Barangay Maraymaray, Municipality of Don Carlos, south of Malaybalay City. This new airport is designed to handle commercial jet aircraft (like the Airbus A320/Boeing 737) and will serve as the primary air gateway for the entire province of Bukidnon once completed.
