Circa late 2013 - early 2014. The airfield ceased all operations following the catastrophic impact of Super Typhoon Haiyan (known locally as Yolanda) in November 2013.
The primary reason for closure was extensive and irreparable damage caused by Typhoon Haiyan. The storm surge and extreme winds likely washed out the unpaved runway and destroyed any ground facilities. Following the disaster, the Philippine government, through the National Housing Authority (NHA), officially repurposed the land to address the urgent need for housing. A resettlement project was built on the site for families displaced by the typhoon, making the airport's closure permanent.
The site of the former Anahao Airfield is no longer an aviation facility. A large portion of the land, including the northern and central sections of the former runway, is now occupied by a permanent housing development, specifically a post-Yolanda resettlement village. Satellite imagery confirms the presence of dozens of homes and a community road network built directly over the old airstrip. The remaining southern end of the runway is completely overgrown with vegetation and appears to be used for small-scale agriculture. There are no visible remnants of its past use as an airfield.
Anahao Airfield was a small community airstrip featuring a single unpaved grass and soil runway. It was never a major commercial hub with scheduled flights. Its significance lay in providing essential air access for the remote municipality of General MacArthur. The airfield primarily handled general aviation traffic, which included private aircraft, air taxi and charter services for business or tourism, and critical medical evacuation flights. It also likely served government, military, and missionary aircraft requiring access to this part of Eastern Samar.
There are zero prospects for reopening Anahao Airfield at its original location. The land has been permanently and irreversibly repurposed for residential use. The construction of the housing project makes any future aviation activity on the site impossible. There are no known public plans or proposals from local or national government bodies to construct a new replacement airport for the municipality of General MacArthur.
