The airport ceased operations gradually and was fully closed by the early 2010s (circa 2010-2012). Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was still somewhat visible in 2010 but had been completely converted to farmland by 2013.
Primarily economic reasons. The airstrip was a private facility tied to the local sugar industry. The decline in the sugar industry's profitability, combined with the high cost of aircraft operation and maintenance and improved road infrastructure in the region, rendered the airstrip obsolete. The land was determined to be more valuable for sugarcane cultivation than for aviation.
The site of the former airport has been completely reclaimed for agricultural use. Current satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms that the area where the runway once existed is now an active sugarcane plantation. There are no visible traces of the runway, hangar, or any other airport infrastructure remaining.
Carolina Airport was a private airstrip, one of many 'sugar strips' common in Negros Occidental during the peak of the sugar industry. Its primary purpose was to support the operations of local sugar plantations (haciendas) and sugar centrals. It handled agricultural aviation, such as crop dusting planes, and served as a private landing field for light aircraft used by hacienda owners and company executives for quick transport to and from Manila or other parts of the country. It was never a commercial airport and did not handle scheduled public passenger or cargo flights.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Carolina Airport. The land has been fully and permanently converted to agriculture. The air transportation needs for Cadiz City and the province of Negros Occidental are comprehensively served by the much larger and modern Bacolod-Silay Airport (ICAO: RPVB, IATA: BCD).
