Likely ceased operations after November 2013. While an exact official closure date is not publicly documented, the airport fell into disuse following the widespread devastation in the region caused by Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). The damage sustained, combined with subsequent business decisions, led to its permanent closure rather than repair.
The closure was primarily due to a combination of natural disaster and economic factors. The facility was likely damaged beyond economic repair by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. Furthermore, the operational costs of maintaining a private airstrip, coupled with the close proximity and availability of the larger, commercially-served Ormoc Airport (OMC, approx. 25 km away), made the private Rizal Airport redundant and economically unviable for its owner, the Energy Development Corporation (EDC).
The site is permanently closed and is no longer used for aviation. The physical runway is still visible in satellite imagery but is in a state of disrepair, heavily overgrown with vegetation. The Energy Development Corporation has repurposed the land for other industrial uses. Notably, a significant portion of the former runway and apron area is now occupied by a solar panel farm. Other parts of the site appear to be used for equipment staging and material storage for the geothermal plant's operations.
The Rizal Airport was a private airstrip built, owned, and operated by the Philippine National Oil Company - Energy Development Corporation (PNOC-EDC). Its sole purpose was to serve the logistical needs of the Leyte Geothermal Production Field, one of the world's largest geothermal power plants. The airport was crucial for transporting company executives, engineers, specialized personnel, and high-value, time-sensitive cargo directly to the remote plant site. It provided a vital, efficient link for managing the nationally significant energy facility, especially during its development and peak operational years when ground access may have been more challenging.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The full operational capacity of the nearby Ormoc Airport sufficiently serves the transportation needs of the region, including corporate and private travel. The repurposing of the land for a solar farm signifies a permanent change in land use, making any future return to aviation activities extremely unlikely.
