The exact date of closure is not officially documented, but the airstrip fell into disuse and was effectively closed by the late 1980s to early 1990s. Its decline and eventual closure were gradual, corresponding with the development and upgrading of the island's primary airport.
The primary reason for the closure was redundancy and replacement due to the development of Tugdan Airport (RPVU/TBH) in Alcantara, on the eastern side of Tablas Island. Tugdan Airport offered a longer, paved runway, a proper terminal, and superior facilities capable of handling larger commercial aircraft (e.g., Fokker 50, and later Airbus A320s). As airlines consolidated their services at the more modern and capable Tugdan Airport, the small, unpaved Ferrol airstrip became economically unviable and operationally obsolete.
The site of the former airstrip is no longer used for aviation. The distinct, long, and straight layout of the runway is still clearly visible from satellite imagery. A significant portion of the former runway has been converted into a local concrete road, often referred to by locals as 'Airport Road' in Brgy. Agnocnoc. The remaining open areas of the strip are used by the local community for various purposes, including drying agricultural products like palay (rice) and copra (coconut), as a recreational area for walking and sports, and for grazing livestock. Residential houses have also been built along its edges.
The Ferrol (Odiongan) Airstrip was historically significant as one of the earliest air access points for Tablas Island, specifically serving the major western municipality and port town of Odiongan. In its active years, it handled general aviation, private charters, and possibly small, government or military aircraft. It was a simple, likely unpaved (grass or gravel) strip that played a crucial role in connecting the island's main commercial hub before Tugdan Airport became the sole, fully-equipped gateway. Its existence underscores the early aviation infrastructure in the Romblon province prior to the consolidation of air services into a single, modern facility.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Ferrol Airstrip. All provincial and national government focus for air transportation on Tablas Island is directed towards the maintenance and potential expansion of the fully operational Tugdan Airport (TBH). Re-establishing the Ferrol airstrip would be economically impractical and is considered unnecessary given that the entire island is adequately served by the existing primary airport.
