Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2020. The terminal ceased operations concurrently with its parent airline, Air Juan, which suspended all flights in early 2020 following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent global travel restrictions.

Reason for Closure

Economic and Regulatory. The primary cause was the financial collapse of its operator, Air Juan. The airline's business model, which catered heavily to high-end tourism, was rendered unsustainable by the complete halt in travel during the pandemic. Subsequently, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) suspended the airline's Air Operator Certificate (AOC), leading to the permanent cessation of all its operations, including this terminal.

Current Status

The physical site is located on the waterfront of the South Road Properties (SRP), immediately adjacent to the Il Corso Filinvest Lifemalls. The dedicated terminal infrastructure, such as the passenger lounge and check-in facilities, has been dismantled or repurposed. The area has been integrated into the mall's public waterfront promenade, serving as a recreational and commercial space. The small pier or dock where the seaplanes moored may still exist in some form but is no longer used for any aviation purposes.

Historical Significance

Established around May 2018, the terminal served as Air Juan's primary hub for the Visayas region. It was significant for being a modern, dedicated seaplane facility that offered a premium and direct travel option, bypassing congested airports and lengthy ferry journeys. The terminal connected Cebu City directly to popular and often hard-to-reach luxury resorts and island destinations. Operations were conducted using a fleet of Cessna Grand Caravan EX amphibian aircraft, which could land on both water and conventional runways. Key routes included flights to Bantayan Island, Malapascua, Siquijor, Sumilon Island, and the Kalanggaman Island sandbar, providing a crucial link for the region's tourism sector. The ICAO identifier PH-0491 was a private, non-official code used for this specific location.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known official plans or prospects for reopening this specific seaplane terminal. The original operator, Air Juan, is defunct and its assets have been liquidated. While the strategic location remains viable for future seaplane operations, no new airline has announced plans to establish a service at this site. The current development focus at the South Road Properties is on large-scale integrated resorts, commercial centers, and residential projects.
