Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Circa June 1991

Reason for Closure

The airfield was destroyed and subsequently buried by lahar (volcanic mudflows) following the cataclysmic eruption of Mount Pinatubo in June 1991. The initial closure was due to heavy ashfall from the eruption itself, but the permanent destruction was caused by the succeeding lahar flows that inundated and buried much of the town of Bacolor over the following years (1991-1995).

Current Status

The site of the former airfield is no longer recognizable as an aviation facility. It is completely buried under several meters of lahar deposits from the Pinatubo eruption. The land has been redeveloped and is now occupied by a residential community, specifically the GEMSVILLE Subdivision, as well as surrounding agricultural land. There are no visible remnants of the runway or any airport infrastructure.

Historical Significance

Angeles South (Lara) Airfield was a privately owned airstrip primarily used for general aviation and agricultural purposes. Its significance was local, serving private pilots, flight training activities, and agricultural aviation (such as crop dusting) for the surrounding sugar cane and rice farmlands in Pampanga, a major agricultural province. It was not a major military or commercial airport but was part of the local aviation infrastructure before the natural disaster. The 'Lara' name likely refers to the family that owned the land or operated the airfield.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The complete burial of the original site and the subsequent redevelopment of the land for residential and agricultural use make a revival of the airfield practically and economically unfeasible. Furthermore, its close proximity to the large and well-equipped Clark International Airport (CRK) negates any strategic or commercial need for a small airstrip at this specific location.
