The exact date of closure is not officially documented. However, based on local government reports referring to it as 'defunct' and its state of disrepair, it has been inactive for several decades, likely ceasing operations sometime in the late 20th century.
While no single event is cited for its closure, the primary reason is believed to be economic non-viability. Like many small provincial airstrips in the Philippines, it likely fell into disuse due to a combination of high maintenance costs, a decline in its original intended use (such as for private business or agriculture), and the improvement of road networks providing a more cost-effective alternative for transportation to the area.
The airstrip is closed and non-operational. Satellite imagery shows the concrete runway is still visible but in a state of significant disrepair, with vegetation overgrowth and surface degradation. The strip is reportedly used informally by local residents as a shortcut, a road, and for agricultural purposes such as drying copra (dried coconut kernel) and other crops.
Cagsiay Airstrip was a small, private, or community airfield serving Mauban and the surrounding region. Its historical significance is purely local. It was not a commercial airport with scheduled flights but rather a general aviation facility. Operations would have been limited to light aircraft, possibly for private transport for local business owners, agricultural spraying, or early tourism and charter services before the area became more accessible by land. It was never a military installation.
There are active plans and strong interest from the local government of Mauban to rehabilitate and reopen the airstrip. Since at least 2017, the municipal government has been pushing for its development into the 'Mauban Community Airport'. The Sangguniang Bayan (Municipal Council) has passed resolutions seeking funding and support from national agencies like the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). The primary motivation for reopening is to boost tourism, particularly to the popular Cagbalete Island, and to attract new investments to the municipality. As of now, these plans remain in the proposal and lobbying stage, with no confirmed funding or timeline for construction and reopening.
