Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately mid-2000s, likely between 2005 and 2008. Satellite imagery from the early 2000s shows an intact runway, while imagery from 2009-2010 shows significant residential construction underway on the site.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for closure was economic, driven by urban encroachment and the increasing value of land. As Batangas City expanded, the land occupied by the airfield became more valuable for real estate development than for general aviation. The property was sold to developers who subsequently converted the entire area into a residential subdivision.

Current Status

The site of the former Batangas Airfield has been completely redeveloped and is no longer used for aviation. The land is now a dense residential area, primarily the Sta. Rita de Casia Subdivision and Villa Sta. Rita. The main road of the subdivision, P. Herrera Road, runs directly through the path of the former runway. While the faint outline of the runway can still be discerned from satellite views, it is entirely covered by houses, streets, and community facilities.

Historical Significance

Batangas Airfield was a privately-owned airport that served as a key general aviation hub for the CALABARZON region. Its operations primarily included:
- **Flight Training:** It was home to several flight schools, providing primary and advanced training for aspiring pilots.
- **Private and Corporate Aviation:** It catered to private aircraft owners and corporate jets, facilitating business travel to and from the industrial zones in Batangas.
- **Charter Services:** Light aircraft charter services operated from the airfield, offering flights for tourism, aerial surveys, and business logistics.
- **Light Cargo:** It handled some light cargo, supporting the nearby Batangas International Port and various industrial estates.
It was not a major commercial airport for scheduled passenger airlines but was a vital piece of local infrastructure for non-scheduled and private air transport.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening the airport at this location. The complete redevelopment of the site into a permanent residential community makes it physically, legally, and economically impossible to revert it to an airfield. Any future development of a new airport for Batangas City or the surrounding province would require the acquisition of a completely new and separate parcel of land in a different, less-developed area.
