The airstrip was phased out of use between approximately 2010 and 2015. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was still clear in 2010 but shows significant encroachment and construction by 2016, rendering it permanently unusable for aviation.
Land redevelopment for economic purposes. The airstrip was situated on valuable coastal land owned by the Zobel de Ayala family. It was closed to allow for the construction of two major projects: the Playa Calatagan residential and resort community (developed by Ayala Land subsidiary, Landco Pacific) and the Calatagan Solar Farm, which was built directly on the northern portion of the former runway.
The site of the former airstrip has been completely repurposed and is no longer recognizable as an aviation facility. The northern half of the runway's footprint is now occupied by the Calatagan Solar Farm, one of the largest solar power plants in the country. The southern half has been absorbed into the Playa Calatagan Village, with parts of the old runway paved over and integrated into the community's road network. The area is now a mix of renewable energy generation and a high-end residential leisure development.
The Calatagan (Hacienda Zobel) Airstrip was a private airfield serving one of the Philippines' most influential families, the Zobel de Ayalas. Its primary function was to provide discreet and rapid transportation for the family, their guests, and business associates to their expansive private estate (Hacienda Bigaa) in Calatagan. It primarily handled light general aviation aircraft, such as single-engine Cessnas and Pipers, and possibly small twin-engine aircraft. The airstrip was a mark of exclusivity and was particularly strategic before modern highways like the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and STAR Tollway made road travel from Manila significantly faster.
None. The prospect of reopening the airstrip is zero. The land has been permanently and fundamentally altered with the construction of a major solar farm and a residential community. Re-establishing an airfield would require the demolition of significant and valuable infrastructure, making it economically and logistically infeasible. Furthermore, improved road connectivity to the region has largely negated the original purpose for which the private airstrip was built.
